Class Description

With a focus on techniques that will allow you to quickly develop a painting “alla prima”, students in this workshop will create a new piece each day.  Establishing value relationships, maintaining a sense of volume throughout the painting process, massing larger forms, and deferring on details and so they can be added in a value-appropriate way that reinforces the main effect, are just some of the concepts that will be emphasized.  Additionally, the instructor will provide an introduction to the Prismatic Palette, developed by Frank Vincent Dumond, and share ways students can adapt the palette box to their own practice, while still benefiting from its many intended concepts and functions.

The cost per class is $40, with payment due at the start of each month (or upon joining), based on the number of sessions that month. Your first class is complimentary, giving you the chance to explore the Zoom format and see if it works for you. Participation is flexible—you’re welcome to join with or without completed homework to share.

Each session is designed to foster learning and creativity. I’ll provide a weekly watercolor prompt or assignment, and you can email me your work (finished or in progress) by the day before class. We’ll begin with a group critique to discuss and learn from each other’s artwork, followed by occasional short demonstrations. Before we close, I’ll offer suggestions for your next project. While the primary focus is on watercolor, you’re welcome to work in other mediums. The class is open to all skill levels, though some basic experience with painting or drawing is encouraged.
